What do we need to know about cough?
Cough is a natural protective reflex mechanism by which the body seeks to expel secretions from its airways or a foreign body. The airways - throat, pharynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs - are a gateway for many pathogens. Therefore, they are often the most affected by infectious agents. Coughing is caused by irritation of specific receptors in the airways that send nerve impulses to the brain, which responds by signaling a cough as it tries to expel the irritating component from the body.

When the body is healthy, coughing successfully clears the respiratory system. In inflammation of the respiratory tract caused by influenza, colds and other viral or bacterial respiratory infections, the cough reflex is not sufficient to expel the accumulated secretions. Therefore, it is often necessary to use expectorants that soften and soothe irritation. The cough may be moist or dry:

With a wet cough , a secretion is formed, which captures the pathogenic microorganisms that have entered the respiratory tract. Through the movements of the cilia of the epithelium, this secretion moves upwards. It is expelled from the airways by coughing. To stop the infection and cough, the body must get rid of the accumulated secretion.
Dry cough is not associated with increased secretion. It is most often accompanied by irritation of the receptors in the throat and pharynx, causing a painful cough. As the infection worsens, the dry cough may turn into a wet one. It can also be quite painful, as the constant unproductive urge to cough, irritate and "scratch" the throat, tense the chest muscles and strain the airways.
