The natural occurrences of the Poria Cocos are found mainly in the east of China. It is also found in Australia and the southeastern United States. It grows in the ground under pines, hence its German name "Kiefernschwamm". Incidentally, this medicinal mushroom is also known under the name "coconut mushroom". But this is based more on its appearance than on its taste. With its round shape and brown skin, it is reminiscent of a small coconut. In English the Poria Cocos is called "Indian Bread", "Indian Potatoe" or "Tuckahoe".
The Poria Cocos fruiting body cannot be cultivated anywhere in the world at this point in time. On the one hand, this is due to the fact that the growth conditions of this mushroom are very different from those of other mushrooms. The mushroom fruit body of this mushroom grows underground in nature (similar to truffles). The global demand for this mushroom is also not that high. It is considered one of the "exotic" mushrooms. Accordingly, the cultivation of the fruiting body - which sometimes requires years or even decades of arduous work - has not been significantly advanced. Similar to the Cordyceps, we therefore use the mycelium cultivated on a millet substrate for this mushroom. It is the same species of fungus that forms the basis of the fruiting body in the wild.
