Heartburn in expectant mothers
The hormonal changes during pregnancy also affect the digestive tract. For example, they cause the muscles there to relax and the functionality of the sphincter muscle between the stomach and esophagus is impaired. This allows stomach acid to rise more easily. Since the pressure in the abdomen also increases as the baby bump grows, many women suffer from heartburn, acid regurgitation, a feeling of fullness and burning pain behind the breastbone, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy.
Effective protection against heartburn
In some cases, doing without classic triggers such as heavy meals is enough to avoid reflux symptoms. If non-drug measures are not effective, Gaviscon ®Advance Suspension in a 24x10 ml dosing bag will help: It is based on the purely plant-based ingredient alginate and is also suitable for treating heartburn throughout pregnancy and breastfeeding. Obtained from brown algae, alginate forms a protective barrier on the acidic chyme and prevents painful reflux. After a short time, there is a noticeable relief from symptoms such as stomach pressure, feeling of fullness, heartburn or reflux cough and the effect lasts for up to 4 hours.

Thanks to the starch they contain, white bread and rusks can bind excess stomach acid and thus neutralize it. What is an alginate?
Alginate, the main active ingredient in Gaviscon ®, is obtained from the brown algae "Laminaria hyperborea" and is purely vegetable. The active principle works on a physical basis: When it comes into contact with stomach acid, alginate forms a protective barrier, including carbon dioxide, which lies on the liquid stomach contents like an air mattress and, like a lid, prevents stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus. After some time, the protective film slowly dissolves and is excreted without absorption of alginate into the bloodstream. This results in a very low risk of side effects.
Can heartburn be avoided during pregnancy?
Basically, every body reacts differently and not every pregnant woman has to suffer from heartburn. However, around three quarters of all women are affected by indigestion and heartburn, especially in the last trimester of pregnancy. The risk can sometimes be reduced through a conscious and balanced diet with smaller portions and avoiding foods that trigger reflux. Prefer wearing loose clothing. Tight clothing, especially with a tight waistband, can increase pressure on the stomach.
Is Gaviscon Advance also suitable for children?
Heartburn is also relatively common in children. However, for relief of symptoms, children under the age of 12 should not take Gaviscon ® Advance Suspension unless directed to do so by a doctor.
