The importance of zinc has been scientifically proven. Without zinc, the human immune system cannot perform its functions properly. The body needs the trace element to form defense cells, control immune reactions and ultimately kill pathogens. If there is a zinc deficiency, the organism lacks the weapons to fend off attacks from viruses and bacteria. The result can be an increased susceptibility to infection. Cough and cold germs then have an easy time of it - especially in the cold, humid season.

A cold lasts seven days with treatment and a week without it? Some studies now show that this is not always true. Even if you notice the first scratchy throat or runny nose, zinc can help. In scientific studies[1-4], taking high doses of zinc shortened the duration of a cold by two to three days. The typical symptoms such as coughing, hoarseness, runny nose and muscle pain also decreased. Less than half of the patients still had a cold after seven days.

Zinc is necessary for many body functions
Zinc not only protects the body against infections: it is a component of more than 300 human enzymes that are involved in the digestion and utilization of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. It also influences the structure of the genetic material and cell growth.

Zinc contributes

Groups at risk of zinc deficiency
Zinc is an essential trace element that is normally sufficiently ingested with food. However, due to changing eating habits, increased consumption of fast food and ready meals, high alcohol consumption, but also because of some voluntary diets or vegan diets, more and more people are consuming too little zinc. Experts assume that about a third of the population does not have an adequate supply of zinc. Foods high in phytine can also reduce zinc absorption. These include, above all, whole grain cereals, beans, nuts, brown rice and corn.

Competitive athletes, pregnant and breastfeeding women, for example, have an increased zinc requirement. The same applies to people with a chronic intestinal disease, diabetes or rheumatism. In older people, the ability of the intestinal mucosa to absorb zinc into the blood also decreases. Certain medications also hinder absorption or increase the need, such as cortisone, blood lipid-lowering agents, stomach acid-binding and dehydrating agents.

How can a zinc deficiency become noticeable?
A zinc deficiency can only be clearly detected through a laboratory blood test. However, there are a number of symptoms that - in addition to the increased susceptibility to infections - can indicate a zinc deficiency:

  • Fatigue and lack of drive
  • declining physical performance
  • persistent states of exhaustion
  • depressive mood
  • brittle nails
  • dry, flaky skin
  • Wound healing disorders


Zinc deficiency can also lead to impaired fertility, growth retardation and anemia.

How much zinc the body needs
The German Society for Nutrition (DGE) currently recommends a daily intake of 10 milligrams for men and 7 milligrams for women. This applies to healthy people, if there is no special need.

Zinc deficiencies can generally be compensated for through a balanced diet: red meat, cheese, nuts, seafood and shellfish are good sources of zinc. However, many people have an unbalanced diet and can therefore suffer from a zinc deficiency without realizing it. Then you can cover your zinc needs with medicines, such as ZINKOTASE from biosyn. One ZINKOTASE film-coated tablet contains 25 milligrams of zinc. The coupling to the body's own amino acid aspartate ensures that the trace element is particularly well absorbed by the organism.
