Areas of application
For the treatment of varroa (Varroa destructor) in honey bees (Apis mellifera).
Contraindications
None
Special warnings
All bee colonies in an apiary must be treated at the same time to avoid reinfection by untreated colonies.
The veterinary medicinal product should be used as part of an integrated Varroa control program with regular monitoring of the mite fall. The use of different substances throughout the year is recommended to avoid the risk of resistance developing.
Special precautions for use
Special precautions for safe use in the target species:
Ensure adequate ventilation during treatment. Open the flight opening to at least 15 cm2. Remove all obstacles in front of and behind the flight opening so as not to restrict ventilation.
High acid concentrations can lead to beard formation in front of the flight hole. In this case, reduce the evaporation capacity of the evaporator and create a 2 cm high opening across the entire width of the hive to reduce the acid concentration in the hive.
The veterinary medicinal product should not be used outside the temperature range of 12 to 30 °C.
Special precautions to be taken by the person administering the veterinary medicinal product to animals:
This veterinary medicinal product is irritating to the skin, eyes, mucous membranes and respiratory tract. Contact with skin, eyes and mucous membranes and inhalation of vapours should therefore be avoided.
When handling the veterinary medicinal product, the user should wear protective equipment consisting of the usual beekeeper's protective clothing as well as safety glasses, chemical-resistant protective gloves and a breathing mask (FFP2).
After accidental contact, immediately wash the skin area with soap and plenty of water and rinse thoroughly. After accidental contact, immediately rinse eyes with plenty of clean, running water for 10 minutes. If skin or eye irritation persists, seek medical advice and show the package leaflet or the label.
In the event of accidental inhalation, if irritation of the respiratory tract persists, seek medical advice and show the package leaflet or the label.
Always wash hands with soap and water immediately after use.
People with known hypersensitivity to formic acid should use the veterinary medicinal product with particular caution.
Special precautions for the environment:
Not applicable.
Other precautionary measures:
The corrosive effect of formic acid on corrosion-sensitive components and beekeeping equipment must be taken into account.
Type of application and dosage
For use in the beehive
Long-term treatment for hives with a volume of approx. 40 L
During long-term treatment, the veterinary medicinal product should evaporate as evenly as possible over the treatment period in order to achieve a continuous, varroacidic formic acid concentration in the hive. To do this, the veterinary medicinal product is introduced into the bee colonies using suitable applicators (e.g. Nassenheider Classic, Nassenheider Professional, Nassenheider Horizontal, Liebig evaporator). These applicators enable continuous evaporation of low doses per unit of time over a longer period of time.
The recommended dosage is 12 - 20 ml of the veterinary medicinal product per frame per day over a period of 10 days. The minimum dose of 12 ml per day should not be undercut. Short-term exceedances of the recommended dosage for a few days by up to 100% can be tolerated. A maximum total amount of 200 ml of the veterinary medicinal product (corresponding to 120 g of formic acid) for a treatment cycle of hives with a frame volume of 40 L should not be exceeded.
Since the individual evaporation rates are highly dependent on the temperature curve, the configuration of the hive and the activity of the colony, the actual evaporation rate must be carefully monitored. For this reason, the amount of formic acid that has already evaporated must be checked 2 days after the start of treatment and the evaporation area of the applicator adjusted if necessary (by changing the wick size or the area of the wick paper). Depending on the size of the applicator's storage container and the individual evaporation rate, veterinary medicinal product may need to be refilled.
As a rule, the total dose of 80 - 120 g of formic acid in hives with a volume of approx. 40 L evaporates within about 10 days. However, the treatment period can also be shortened or exceed the specified time. Therefore, the actual evaporation rate should be checked and, if necessary, adjusted via the wick size in order to achieve the minimum daily dose of 8 - 12
