Ingredients
Melia Azadirachta Leaf Extract is an extract from the leaves of the Indian neem, Melia azadirachta, Meliaceae. The extract from the leaves of the Indian neem is exceptionally rich in secondary plant substances and essential oils. Neem leaves have anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, antiparasitic properties.
Neem and its leaves are used as repellents because they are active against various types of insects: an aqueous extract of the leaves is active against the oviposition of Anticaria gemmatalis, fresh leaves are mutagenic to the mosquito Aedes aegypti, dihydronimocynol and 6-α-hydroxy-azadiradione have been shown to be lethal to Anopheles stephensi (at the fourth larval stage), and salanin prolongs the larval stage, delays the cocoon stage, causes mortality in larvae and pupae, and reduces the pupal weight of Oxya fuscovittata. Some limonoid derivatives adversely affect the fertility of the housefly Musca domestica . Azadirachtin is toxic to the hemiptera Rhodnius prolixus, inhibits the feeding process of the locust Schistocerca gregaria, and is active against over 200 species of insects, interrupting their growth and impeding their feeding. To some extent, it is therefore toxic to them, but it has very low toxicity to mammals and is biodegradable. The most active compounds of neem are azadirachtin A, azadirachtin B and salanin, which are soluble in water, thanks to which neem extract retains their repellent properties. Therefore, neem extract is recommended in insect repellent cosmetics.
