side effects
- Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
-
Possible side effects:
- The occurrence of side effects depends on the individual sensitivity to caffeine and the daily consumption of caffeine-containing beverages.
- Even low doses can lead to insomnia, inner restlessness, tachycardia and gastrointestinal problems. Irritability, headaches and increased physiological tremors (muscle tremors) can also occur in less sensitive people at doses of more than 200 mg (corresponding to 4 tablets of the preparation).
- Prolonged use of caffeine, especially medium to high doses, leads to the development of tolerance to most effects, but also to side effects.
- Headaches, tiredness, muscle pain, nervousness and vegetative symptoms can occur if the drug is stopped abruptly after long-term use of higher doses.
- Allergic reactions have been described in individual cases.
- If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.
-
What countermeasures should be taken in the event of side effects?
- Please refrain from further intake of the preparation and any intake of caffeinated beverages or stimulants. Please contact your doctor.
interactions
-
Taking the preparation together with other medicines
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
- Caffeine has an antagonistic (opposite) effect to the sedative effects of numerous substances, such as e.g. B. Barbiturates (sedatives), antihistamines (medicines against allergies) etc.
- Caffeine acts synergistically (in the same direction/increasingly) compared to the tachycardic effects of e.g. B. Sympathomimetics (hypertensive agents), thyroxine (thyroid hormone) etc.
- In the case of broad-spectrum substances, the interactions may vary in detail and be unpredictable (e.g. sedatives of the benzodiazepine type).
- When 50 mg of caffeine is administered at the same time as paracetamol or acetylsalicylic acid (certain painkillers and fever relievers), a relative analgesic (pain-relieving) potency of between 1.3 and 1.7 has been found in various studies. This can lead to a corresponding saving of the analgesic substance.
- The promoting influence of caffeine on the absorption of ergotamine and dihydroergotamine has not been adequately proven experimentally.
- Oral contraceptives ("birth control pills"), cimetidine (agent against gastrointestinal ulcers) and disulfiram (alcohol cessation aid) reduce the breakdown of caffeine in the liver, while barbiturates (tranquilizers) and smoking accelerate it.
- The excretion of theophylline (asthma drug) is reduced by caffeine.
- Concurrent administration of quinolonecarboxylic acid-type gyrase inhibitors (antibacterial agents) may delay the elimination of caffeine and its breakdown product paraxanthine.
- Caffeine increases the potential for dependency on substances of the ephedrine type (centrally acting sympathomimetic). There is no evidence that caffeine increases the potential for dependence on analgesics (painkillers) such as acetylsalicylic acid or paracetamol.
- Even if it can be assumed on the basis of theoretical considerations, an independent abuse potential of caffeine in combination with analgesics is not proven based on the current knowledge.
- Please note that this information may also apply to recently used medicines.
-
Taking the preparation with food and drink
- Please note that when using the preparation and drinking caffeine-containing beverages at the same time, 50 to 100 mg of caffeine are additionally absorbed with a cup of coffee/black tea and around 20 mg of caffeine with a glass of cola.
Contraindications
-
The preparation must not be taken
- if you are allergic to caffeine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
pregnancy and breast feeding period
-
pregnancy
- If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
- High doses of caffeine during pregnancy may increase the risk of miscarriage (spontaneous abortion) and premature birth.
-
lactation
- The infant's well-being and behavior can be affected during breastfeeding. In the first months of life, the ability to excrete caffeine is about 10 times lower than that of adults. Only after 4 to 8 months does the ability to excrete caffeine approach that of adults.
- The indicated dosages should not be exceeded during pregnancy and lactation.
patient notes
-
Warnings and Precautions
- Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
- Patients with cardiac arrhythmias (risk of aggravation), patients with liver cirrhosis (risk of reduced caffeine breakdown and thus caffeine accumulation in the body), patients with hyperthyroidism (risk of aggravation of caffeine side effects) and patients suffering from anxiety (risk of reinforcement) should only use caffeine in low doses (approx. 100 mg; corresponding to 2 tablets of the preparation) or under medical prescription.
- You should not overestimate the ability to compensate for reduced performance through the use of caffeine. Caffeine in no way compensates for the performance impaired by alcohol, in individual cases there is a risk of accelerated absorption of alcohol into the blood.
- Prolonged abuse of high doses is warned because of the possible occurrence of symptoms of acute caffeine intoxication.
-
children
- Children are most likely to experience side effects from caffeine.
-
Ability to drive and use machines
- When used as intended, the preparation does not impair the ability to drive or operate machines.
