Doxylamine hydrogen succinate is the active substance of Senamina. Doxylamine is an antihistamine that has a sedative and hypnotic effect. The drug is indicated for short-term, symptomatic treatment of occasional insomnia in adults, it is especially recommended in the case of difficulty falling asleep, frequent night awakenings, early morning awakening due to stress or changing time zones. The drug is not intended to treat chronic sleep disorders.

Keep the product out of reach of children, at room temperature. It is recommended to protect against moisture and light. Talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine if you suffer from epilepsy (antihistamines can sometimes make you hyperactive and therefore lower the seizure threshold); you are sleepy during the day - you may need to reduce your dose or take your dose earlier to ensure there is at least 8 hours between taking your medicine and waking up, avoid drinking alcohol during treatment; you have long QT syndrome (arrhythmias); if you have low blood potassium levels or other electrolyte disturbances; if you have urinary retention; in case of heart disease; taking other medicines that may be harmful to the ear (e.g. carboplatin or cisplatin (medicines used to treat cancer), chloroquine (a medicine used to treat or prevent malaria)) and certain antibiotics (used to treat infections) e.g. erythromycin or aminoglycosides as an injection, as this medicine may mask the harmful effects of these medicines on your hearing. People over the age of 65 are more likely to experience side effects. This drug may cause an increase in the symptoms of dehydration and heat stroke caused by reduced sweating, mainly in hot weather, especially in the elderly. Improper use of the drug, including taking the drug for too long or exceeding the recommended doses, may cause side effects. Watch your reaction to the drug, including possible side effects or overdose symptoms. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Do not take the medicine for more than 7 days, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Use in children and adolescents: the drug should not be used under 18 years of age. Use with other drugs: this should be discussed with your doctor; do not take this medicine with medicines such as: epinephrine (used to treat low blood pressure), heart medicines such as medicines to treat arrhythmias, some antibiotics, some antimalarial medicines, some antihistamines, some medicines used to lower lipids (fats) in the blood or certain neuroleptic drugs (used to treat mental disorders) The drug may interfere with skin allergy tests that use allergens, stop using the drug at least three days before the test. You should not drink alcohol while taking this medicine. The drug can be taken regardless of the meal. Use during pregnancy and breast-feeding: consult your doctor, do not take this medicine during pregnancy unless otherwise directed by your doctor; during breastfeeding, the use of this drug is contraindicated. There are no data on the effect on fertility. Driving and using machines: The medicine has a major influence on the ability to drive and use machines, as it causes drowsiness. Contraindications:
Do not use in case of hypersensitivity to any component of the drug. Do not use if you are allergic to other antihistamines (anti-allergy). Do not use if you have respiratory conditions such as asthma, bronchitis (persistent cough that produces thick saliva (sputum) and mucus) or emphysema (inflammation of the lungs causing difficulty breathing). Do not use in the case of glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye). Do not use if you have prostatic hyperplasia (abnormal enlargement of the prostate), obstruction of the bladder neck (urinary system disease), or difficulty urinating. Do not use in the case of gastric ulcer or the beginning of the intestine or duodenal stenosis (difficulties with the movement of food from the stomach into the intestine). Do not use in case of severe kidney or liver disease. Do not use if you are taking monoamine oxidase inhibitors (drugs used in depression and Parkinson's disease), antiepileptic drugs, antidepressants, some antibiotics, heart drugs, e.g. lipids (fats). Do not use during breastfeeding.

Side effects:
Some people may experience side effects while taking this medicine. In general, side effects are usually mild and transient, occurring more often in the first days of treatment. Very common: somnolence. Common: dry mouth, constipation, upper abdominal pain, blurred vision, urinary retention, increased secretion of mucus in the bronchi, dizziness, headache, fatigue, insomnia, nervousness. Uncommon: asthenia, peripheral edema (e.g. swelling of arms and legs), nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, indigestion, rash, tinnitus, orthostatic hypotension (drop in blood pressure when changing body position), double vision, feeling relaxed, nightmares shortness of breath (difficulty breathing). Rare: agitation (particularly in the elderly), tremor, convulsions, red blood cell count decreased, white blood cells or platelets. Other side effects usually caused by antihistamines that have not been seen with doxylamine include: arrhythmias (changes in heart rate), palpitations, bile reflux, abnormal liver function (cholestatic jaundice), prolonged QT interval on ECG, loss of appetite increased appetite, myalgia, coordination disorder, extrapyramidal disorder (movement disorder), paraesthesia (sensory disorder), psychomotor disorder (sensory or motor coordination), depression, decreased bronchial mucus secretion, alopecia, allergic dermatitis, hyperhidrosis, hypersensitivity to light, hypotension (low blood pressure). Reducing the daily dose allows the severity and frequency of side effects to be controlled. People over the age of 65 are more likely to experience side effects because they may have other medical conditions or be taking other medications at the same time. These people are also more likely to fall.

Dosage of doxylamine succinate, insomnia treatment, menopause insomnia treatment, Senamina tablets:

Use the drug as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the leaflet. Adults (over 18 years of age): the recommended dose - 12.5-25mg (1-2 tablets). In case of daytime sleepiness, it is recommended to reduce the dose from 25mg to 12.5mg or take the dose earlier to ensure at least an 8-hour interval between taking the drug and the planned waking up. The maximum daily dose: 25mg (2 tablets). Elderly (over 65 years of age): at this age you are more likely to have other medical conditions that may require a lower dose. The recommended starting dose is 12.5mg (1 tablet), administered 30 minutes before bedtime. The dose may be increased to 25mg (2 tablets) if the initial dose is not effective. If side effects occur, the dose should be reduced to 12.5 mg per day (1 tablet). People with kidney or liver problems: the drug is contraindicated in people with severe kidney or liver disease, it is not recommended in people with moderate kidney or liver disease. In people with mild kidney or liver disease, it is recommended to reduce the maximum daily dose to 12.5 mg (1 tablet). Use in children and adolescents: do not use. Take the tablet orally, 30 minutes before bedtime, with a sufficient amount of liquid (preferably water). There should be an interval of at least 8 hours between taking the drug and the planned waking up because of the possibility of persistent drowsiness. The drug can be taken before or after a meal. The tablet can be divided in half to make it easier to swallow, but please note that the groove does not divide the tablet into two equal doses. Duration of treatment: it is recommended to keep it as short as possible - from a few days to a week.
