  • The medicine is a mixture of digestive enzymes obtained from pig pancreas (pancreatic enzymes).
  • The drug is used to replace digestive enzymes in digestive disorders (maldigestion) due to insufficient or missing function of the pancreas (exocrine pancreatic insufficiency).
  • If you do not feel better or if you feel worse after a few days, contact your doctor.

  • Always take this medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • The treatment is aimed at achieving or maintaining a normal body weight and normalizing the frequency and consistency of bowel movements.
  • The dosage always depends on the severity of the pancreatic disease. A lipase content per meal of 20,000 - 40,000 Ph.Eur. units is recommended as a general guideline.
  • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:
    • 1 hard capsule per meal (equivalent to 40,000 Ph.Eur. units of lipase per meal).
  • The required dose can also be higher. The dose should only be increased under medical supervision and aimed at improving the symptoms (e.g. excretion of stool fat, abdominal pain).
  • A daily enzyme dose of 15,000 - 20,000 units of lipase per kg of body weight should not be exceeded.

 

  • How long should you take the medicine?
    • The duration of the application depends on the course of the disease and is determined by the doctor.

  • Do not take capsules lying down.
  • Take the medicine whole with plenty of liquid (water, juice) during meals. Please ensure that you swallow the preparation without chewing, as chewing the drug can reduce its effectiveness and the enzymes it contains can damage the mucous membrane there when they are released in the oral cavity. You should drink plenty of fluids (water or juice).

  • In patients with cystic fibrosis, increased uric acid excretion in the urine can occur, especially when taking high doses of pancreas powder. Therefore, urinary uric acid excretion should be monitored in these patients to avoid the formation of uric acid stones.

  • Taking with other medicines
    • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
    • The effect of the drugs or groups of preparations listed below can be influenced if they are treated with this preparation at the same time:
      • The effectiveness of pancreas powder can be reduced by the simultaneous intake of calcium or magnesium antacids (medicines against acidification of the stomach).
      • Although the connections z. Currently not yet elucidated, iron deficiency has often been described with long-term use of pancreas powder in patients with cystic fibrosis. Iron deficiency can be a cause of anemia. If you experience symptoms of anemia, such as B.       • Pancreas powder also contains carbohydrate-splitting enzymes. If this medicine is taken at the same time as certain blood-sugar-lowering medicines (glucosidase inhibitors such as acarbose and miglitol), the antidiabetic effectiveness of these medicines may be reduced. To avoid these interactions, a staggered intake is recommended.
      • Pancreas powder impedes the absorption of folic acid. Patients with pancreatic insufficiency should be carefully monitored for their folic acid status, particularly if they are taking pancreatic enzymes with bicarbonate (or with cimetidine).

Contraindications

  • Warnings and Precautions
    • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
    • It contains active enzymes which, when released in the oral cavity, e.g. B. by chewing, can lead to mucosal damage (e.g. ulceration of the oral mucosa). It is therefore important to ensure that the preparation is swallowed whole.
    • If you suffer from cystic fibrosis, a congenital metabolic disorder, and are therefore given high doses of pancreas powder from pigs, there is the possibility that narrowing of the intestine (strictures) will form in certain parts of the small and large intestine. These narrowings can sometimes lead to an intestinal blockage. The following symptoms can indicate an intestinal obstruction: nausea and vomiting, flatulence with stool and wind retention, (severe) colicky pain, belching, later possibly vomiting faeces (so-called Miserere). If you experience any of these symptoms, you must seek medical attention immediately.
    • If you suffer from diabetes mellitus and are therefore taking blood sugar-lowering drugs that belong to the group of glucosidase inhibitors, then these drugs should not be taken at the same time as this preparation, but rather at different times.
