- In the case of insufficient renal performance (renal insufficiency) and long-term intake of high doses, aluminum deposits, especially in the nerve and bone tissue, and phosphate depletion as well as an increased magnesium level in the blood up to symptoms of poisoning by magnesium, which are caused by central nervous disorders, muscle weakness, reflex failures, can occur , fatigue, symptoms of paralysis, unconsciousness and cardiac arrhythmia.

Taking with other medicines
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
- The absorption and thus the effectiveness of other medicines are reduced by the medicine. This is particularly important with certain antibiotics (e.g. tetracyclines and quinolone derivatives such as ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, norfloxacin, trovafloxacin) and with drugs that increase heart strength (cardiac glycosides). A reduction in the intake of the following drugs has also been described: halofantrine (malaria drug), phenytoin (epilepsy drug), H 2 -receptor blockers of the cimetidine type, ranitidine (agent against gastric and intestinal ulcers), beta-blockers such as propranolol; Sotalol (hypertensive medicine). In contrast, an increase in absorption of levodopa (Parkinson's drug) was observed.
- Alkalinization of the urine during therapy can affect the excretion of some drugs. This can e.g. B. lead to a decrease in salicylate levels or an increase in quinidine levels.
- Therefore, other medicines should be taken 1-2 hours before or after taking this medicine.
-
Take with food and drink
- Concomitant use of this drug and acidic drinks (fruit juices, wine) leads to an undesirable increase in the absorption of aluminum from the intestine. Effervescent tablets also contain fruit acids, which can increase aluminum intake.

- With long-term use of the drug, regular monitoring of the aluminum serum level is required. 40 µg/l should not be exceeded.
- In patients with impaired kidney function and chronic intake of high doses, there is the possibility of poisoning such as an increase in the magnesium or aluminum level in the blood.
- Long-term intake of high doses and a low-phosphate diet can lead to phosphate depletion with the risk of softening of the bones (osteomalacia). Long-term use of high doses should therefore be avoided in patients with impaired renal function.
