For whom was Riopan ® gastric gel developed?
Riopan ® stomach gel with the active ingredient magaldrate, thanks to its liquid form, acts quickly and directly where heartburn occurs in the esophagus. An excess of stomach acid can be the cause of heartburn, acid regurgitation, stomach problems such as a feeling of pressure in the stomach, a feeling of fullness (even after small meals), nausea, nausea or burning pain in the upper abdomen.
How does Riopan ® gastric gel work?
Riopan ® Gastric Gel binds excess gastric acid and buffers the gastric pH value in the physiological range of 3-5. Pain is relieved without affecting important digestive functions. Riopan ®Gastric gel is well tolerated and acts directly on the destination, the esophagus and the stomach. The active ingredient magaldrate is practically not absorbed, which results in a favorable side effect profile.
How does heartburn develop?
Heartburn occurs when stomach acid travels up the esophagus. Affected people feel this through a stabbing, burning pain or a sour, uncomfortable feeling in the throat - consequences of excessive acid production in the stomach.
Why does the stomach make stomach acid?
Stomach acid is used for pre-digestion and kills bacteria contained in the food. It therefore has an important role in food intake. So that the stomach acid does not attack the stomach, it is protected by the stomach lining.
Is there any long-term damage from untreated heartburn or excessive acid production in the stomach?
If gastric acid travels up the esophagus on a long-term and regular basis or if there is a constant excess of acid in the stomach, chronic changes can develop. Long-term damage such as inflammation of the esophagus, difficulty swallowing and other secondary diseases (such as gastric or duodenal ulcers) cannot be ruled out. The stomach lining protects the stomach from stomach acid. If the stomach is constantly acidic, the gastric mucosa can be attacked and become thinner or more permeable. The result: the stomach wall is attacked.
Medical advice should be sought if the following alarm symptoms occur:
- Bleeding in the stomach (e.g. stool turning black)
- difficulties swallowing
- Severe, unintentional weight loss
- Swelling and hardening in the abdomen
- Chest or upper abdominal pain
- Vomiting with no apparent trigger
How is Riopan ® gastric gel used?
Unless otherwise prescribed, children from 12 years of age and adults use one sachet several times a day as required, a maximum of 4 sachets a day. Before ingestion, the bag is shaken and the gel is taken undiluted or with a little liquid. Riopan ® gastric gel is used for symptomatic treatment. If symptoms persist for more than 2 weeks, a doctor should be consulted.
