Age-Related Macular Degeneration - Every moment is precious
In order to see clearly, we need the macula. The macula, also called the yellow spot, is located at the back of the eye, just opposite the lens. It contains the highest density of photoreceptor cells and enables us to see precisely what we are looking at at the moment, be it the time, coins or text.

In age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a widespread disease of the retina of the eye, there is a slow deterioration (degeneration) of the tissue with visual disturbances, progressive impairment of vision and even blindness.

The first symptoms of AMD are blurred vision, for example straight lines are perceived as distorted. As it progresses, an opaque veil develops in the center of the field of view, as if looking through frosted glass. Even everyday things, such as reading the time, sorting coins and, at an advanced stage, recognizing faces or estimating distances, e.g. B. in traffic, is becoming more and more problematic until it is no longer possible.

Good to know - What can you do to prevent macular degeneration?
Age-related macular degeneration primarily affects people over the age of 50. Two forms of AMD are known: dry age-related macular degeneration is relatively slow and accounts for 85% of AMD diseases. The rarer, wet AMD often arises from the dry form and has a more aggressive course.

The main risk factors for AMD are age and hereditary predisposition. But smoking, high blood pressure, unhealthy eating habits, obesity, strong sunlight, cataract surgery and increased homocysteine ​​levels in the blood can also have a negative impact on eye health.

You can become active yourself with these points:
  • Do sports and stay physically active.
  • Don't smoke or cut down as much as possible.
  • Protect your eyes from strong UV rays.
  • Eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins with plenty of fruit and vegetables.
  • Have your homocysteine ​​levels checked.
