Caelo Glauber's Salt

Sodium sulfate decahydrate benefits:

Glauber's salt, the decahydrate, is used as a laxative. It is effective for the removal of certain drugs, such as paracetamol (acetaminophen) from the body; thus it can be used after an overdose. In 1953, sodium sulfate was proposed for heat storage in passive solar heating systems.

Glauber's salt benefits:

Bathing in Glauber's salt water stimulates the circulation, improves the body's own immune defences and creates a feeling of gentle relaxation.

Areas of use: For short-term use in cases of constipation; for emptying the bowels before diagnostic and therapeutic measures.

Contraindications: Sodium sulfate decahydrate must not be used in cases of intestinal obstruction. It should not be used in cases of high blood pressure, heart failure, inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases or disorders of the water and electrolyte balance. Sodium sulfate decahydrate should not be used during pregnancy as it can increase the existing tendency to form edema.

Side effects: The use of very high doses or chronic use of sodium sulfate decahydrate can lead to increased sodium content in the blood, water retention and high blood pressure. As with other laxatives, prolonged use can lead to increased losses of water, potassium and other salts. This can lead to disturbances in heart function and muscle weakness, especially when taken at the same time as diuretics and adrenal cortex steroids.
