• Physicians and patients should be aware of the possibility of interaction of vitamin K antagonists with the goji berry. At the end of March 2013, the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices published a warning about possible interactions with certain "blood-thinning" (anticoagulant) drugs (vitamin K antagonists) such as phenprocoumon (Marcumar®) and warfarin (Coumadin®). Goji berries appear to block the breakdown of these drugs in the body, leading to a dangerous accumulation of active ingredients and an increased tendency to bleed. People taking vitamin K antagonists should avoid preparations containing goji berries.
