BICANORM gastro-resistant tablets
The medicine is a gastro-resistant tablet used to treat metabolic acidosis (excessive acidity of the blood caused by reduced acid excretion by the kidneys) in adults and adolescents aged 14 years and older with chronic kidney failure. The tablets may release absorbable sodium and bicarbonate in the small intestine.
How does the active ingredient in the medicine work?
The active ingredient is a salt that the body needs to maintain a neutral blood environment. If the pH shifts into the acidic range, for example, due to lung or kidney dysfunction, a life-threatening situation can arise for the patient. The salt restores the disturbed balance. If severe diarrhea has deprived the body of essential salts, a solution containing, for example, baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) can replenish the stores.
