Indication/ Milk thistle Application

  • The preparation is a herbal medicine for liver diseases.
  • Application areas:
    • For the supportive treatment of chronic inflammatory liver diseases, liver cirrhosis and toxic liver damage (caused by liver toxins).
  • The drug is not intended for the treatment of acute poisoning.

Milk thistle dosage

  • Always take the preparation exactly as directed. Please check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
  • Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is:
    • Adults and adolescents from the age of 12 take 2 capsules (milk thistle fruit extract corresponding to 324.6 mg silymarin) 3 times a day.

 

  • duration of use
    • The doctor treating you decides how long you should take it. If the symptoms persist despite taking the preparation, the doctor should be consulted.

 

  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak.

 

  • If you take more than you should:
    • Symptoms of poisoning have not been observed to date.
    • In the event of an overdose, the side effects described can occur to an increased extent. If you suspect an overdose, please contact your doctor.
    • A specific antidote is not known.

 

  • If you have any further questions on the use of the medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

  • The hard capsules should be swallowed whole with some liquid before eating.

  • Like all medicines, the preparation can have side effects, although not everyone gets them.
  • The frequency of side effects is based on the following categories:
    • Very common: affects more than 1 in 10 people
    • Common: affects 1 to 10 users in 100
    • Uncommon: affects 1 to 10 users in 1,000
    • Rare: affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000
    • Very rare: affects less than 1 in 10,000 people
    • Not known: frequency cannot be estimated from the available data
  • Possible side effects:
    • Gastrointestinal complaints such as a slight laxative effect are rarely observed.
    • Hypersensitivity reactions, eg skin rash or shortness of breath, can occur very rarely.
  • If you notice any of the above side effects, tell your doctor so that he can decide on the severity and any necessary measures. If hypersensitivity reactions occur, the preparation should be discontinued.
  • Please tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the listed side effects gets serious, or if you notice any side effects not listed here.

  • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using or have recently taken/used other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.

Milk thistle Contraindications

  • The preparation must not be taken
    • if you have a known hypersensitivity to milk thistle fruits and/or other composite plants and to any of the other ingredients.

pregnancy Milk thistle and breast feeding period

  • The preparation should not be used during pregnancy and lactation due to insufficient examinations.
  • Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking any medicine.

  • Drug therapy does not replace avoidance of the causes that damage the liver (alcohol).
  • Special care is required when taking
    • if you have jaundice (light to dark yellow skin discoloration, yellowing of the whites of the eyes), a doctor should be consulted.
    • with children
      • There are insufficient studies on the use of this medicine in children. It should therefore not be used in children under the age of 12.

 

  • Driving and using machines:
    • There are no special precautions required.

Further information

- Long-term use of the medicine may lead to increased loss of water, potassium and other minerals.
- Taking the drug is not a substitute for avoiding causes that damage the liver (e.g. alcohol).
- In case of light to dark yellow skin discoloration or yellowing of the whites of the eyes, a doctor must be consulted.
- In case of poisoning, it is necessary to consult a doctor before taking the drug.
