Contraindications

Introduction
The connection between disease, malnutrition and an increased rate of complications such as wound healing disorders or infections has been known in medicine for a long time.

The importance of nutrition as part of the overall therapy is undisputed today, which was not least supported and
promoted by the constant further development and improvement of enteral nutrition products. Adapted to the multitude of different needs, a product range of standard, modified and special tube feedings is available today, which enables the simple implementation of individual nutritional concepts.

The legal basis for prescribing is regulated in the Medicines Directive (AMR). Enteral nutrition is therefore sufficient if there is no or limited ability to do so
Diet can be prescribed if a modification of the normal diet or other medical, nursing or nutritional therapy measures to improve the nutritional situation are not
sufficient.

Food and liquid
administration At the beginning of tube feeding, the food should be gradually dosed over several days. It is advisable to use fiber-containing variants as early as the nutritional phase.

The incidence of diarrhea and constipation can be reduced. This can make a significant contribution to improving patient well-being. After a long period of fasting or parenteral nutrition, it may be necessary to take an oligopeptide food, e.g. B. Peptisorb to use. In order to avoid the risk of diarrhea in particularly sensitive patients due to intolerance
to an ingredient (e.g. milk protein), the use of tube feedings with soy protein (e.g. Surogate D) is recommended.

If a patient is fed not exclusively, but additionally with tube feeding, this amount of food must be taken into account when creating the individual nutrition plan.

A patient's fluid needs can be met to a large extent from the free fluid contained in tube feeding. Existing differences to the individual needs of the patient must be supplemented by the additional administration of liquid (e.g. still mineral water or boiled tap water).

Shelf life
After opening, store the sealed bottle in the refrigerator for a maximum of 24 hours.

contraindications
The tube feedings described below should always not be used if enteral nutrient supply is not possible (e.g. in the case of ileus, acute abdomen) or if there is intolerance to one of the ingredients used. All products mentioned here contain soy lecithin as an emulsifier. They are gluten-free and strictly low in lactose or lactose-free. Fructose is not added individually. In the case of fructose intolerance, the fructose content of sucrose must be taken into account.

Exception:
Diason contains fructose.

Feeding Pumps
For most patients, tube feeding using a feeding pump (e.g., Infinity) is most tolerable. In the case of a gastric and especially an intestinal tube position, nutritional pumps ensure the greatest dosage security. With the widely used, thin-lumen feeding tubes (below CH 8), pump-controlled application is usually essential in practice.

Complications caused by incorrect dosing, such as a feeling of fullness, vomiting, blood sugar shifts and diarrhea can be avoided by using nutritional pumps. In the feeding phase, minimal amounts of substrate can be fed in precisely within controlled time units with the help of a feeding pump.
