1 Femibion ® products contain Folic Acid Plus (a combination of folic acid and Metafolin ® ) and selected nutrients. Metafolin ® is a form of folate that can be absorbed directly by the body and helps increase folate levels, which are important for your baby's healthy development. 1
Metafolin® _is a registered trademark of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, and is used under license. The additional folic acid intake increases maternal folate levels. Low maternal folate levels are a risk factor for developing neural tube defects in the growing fetus. Therefore, women are recommended to take an additional 400 mg of folic acid daily for at least one month before and up to three months after conception. There is scientific evidence to suggest that low maternal folate levels are a significant risk factor for developing neural tube defects. However, there are other risk factors as well. Therefore, changing a single factor may or may not have a beneficial effect. Folate remains important in later pregnancy, as it contributes to the growth of maternal tissues (e.g. the placenta). The placenta provides the baby with all the nutrients. Adequate folic acid intake should therefore be ensured throughout pregnancy.

Femibion ® 2 and Femibion ® 3 also contain DHA (omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid). Maternal intake of DHA contributes to normal brain and eye development in the fetus and breastfed infant. In addition to the recommended daily dose of 250 mg of omega-3 fatty acids (DHA and EPA) for adults, an additional 200 mg of DHA is recommended.
