Folic acid contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy.
In addition, the supplemental intake of folic acid in pregnant women increases the folate level. Low folate levels in pregnant women are a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the growing fetus.
The positive effect occurs with a supplemental intake of 400 μg of folic acid daily over a period of at least one month before and up to three months after conception.
