How does the body adapt to pregnancy?
Oxidative stress plays an important role in pregnancy. In the beginning, the oxygen content in the placenta is very low to support the child's development and nutrition. Later, the oxygen content in a healthy placenta increases significantly. This change is beneficial for the further development of the child. However, an increased oxygen content also leads to an increase in oxidative stress (ROS). However, the fetus is very vulnerable to oxidative stress. Therefore, at the same time, the level of antioxidants is also increased to maintain the balance.

What does oxidative stress do?
Oxidative stress has two faces. On the one hand, oxidative stress is required for the functioning of cellular tasks. This includes, for example, the immune response. On the other hand, excess oxidative stress quickly causes damage. Therefore, a balance is essential.

How does selenium contribute to protection against oxidative stress?
As a component of selenium proteins, selenium is an important component of the protective mechanisms in the body against oxidative stress. Most of the selenium proteins are antioxidants, with the most important antioxidant selenium protein being found in every single cell. Among other things, this protein breaks down the cell toxin hydrogen peroxide into water. If the selenium supply is insufficient, the antioxidant function of the selenium proteins is severely restricted. This can have negative effects on both mother and child.

Is selenium the same as selenium?
Selenium comes in different forms that are used differently by the human body. The most common form of selenium in food is selenomethionine. In contrast, the inorganic form of selenium, sodium selenite, has advantages as a dietary supplement. Sodium selenite is absorbed by the body by passive diffusion and is rapidly converted into selenium proteins. The body can also easily excrete it through the urine.
Although the bioavailability of selenomethionine is higher than that of sodium selenite, the utilization is much more complicated. Selenomethionine is not recognized by the body as a form of selenium, but is confused with the amino acid methionine. As a result, selenomethionine is built into sulphur-containing proteins in an unspecific and unregulated manner. On the one hand, this selenium is only partially available to selenium proteins and only via detours. On the other hand, this can lead to an accumulation in the body.

When am I sufficiently supplied with selenium?
The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) defines all values below 80 μg/l selenium in serum or below 100 μg/l selenium in whole blood as selenium deficiency. The reference range for selenium is 80 – 120 μg/l in serum and 100 – 140 μg/l in whole blood.

How do I determine my selenium status?
The selenium status is best measured as part of a blood test by your doctor, preferably in whole blood, as this value indicates long-term supply. The serum value only reflects the current supply of selenium. It can happen that the serum value already signals a normal selenium status, while a selenium deficiency can still be detected in the whole blood.

biosyn service laboratory
The biosyn service laboratory offers a determination of selenium in whole blood using modern methods such as atomic absorption spectroscopy or photometry. Regular participation in official round robin tests ensures the correctness of the results. Along with the measured values, you will receive an assessment of the results and a comparison with the reference values specified by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). All information can be found at www.biosyn.de/labor. You can print out the complete form via the "Analysis request" link. Otherwise you can order the form and the required shipping material by telephone (0711 / 57532-00) or by email (info@biosyn.de).
