As a central component of numerous metabolic processes in the body, vitamin D is an important factor for our vitality. However, our lifestyle has become significantly less sunshine in recent years. Many people spend practically the whole day in closed rooms. We only manage to cover 10% of our vitamin D requirements through food. Can you get vitamin D through food?
Vitamin D is primarily formed through exposure to the sun; we can only take in around 10 percent of our vitamin D requirement through diet. A pure food supply can only be achieved if large quantities of oily fish such as herring, eel and salmon are regularly consumed.
Can I soak up sunlight in the solarium and absorb vitamin D in the skin?
Unfortunately, solariums are no substitute for a lack of exposure to the sun. By equipping it with UV filters, the amount of UV-B is severely limited.
In Britain's mostly sunny months from April to October, fair-skinned young people are enough to take 15 minutes of sunbathing several times a week. Due to the storage capacity of the body, a supply of vitamin D could be built up at least for the first few weeks in autumn and winter.
