MICRONUTRIENTS FOR THE EYES 1
• Vitamin C helps protect cells from oxidative stress
• Vitamin C contributes to the regeneration of the reduced form of vitamin E
• Vitamin E helps protect cells from oxidative stress
• Copper helps protect cells from oxidative stress
• Zinc helps protect cells from oxidative stress
• 1 Zinc helps maintain normal vision
The US ARED studies – Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) 2 – have shown that it is beneficial to take certain antioxidant micronutrients and zinc. These vitamins and minerals, referred to below as AREDS micronutrients, showed protective effects.

ALGAE AND EYES
Research 3 on marine algae has discovered that the fucoidans contained in algae have antioxidant properties and also inhibit intracellular growth factors (VEGFs), which play a crucial role in the progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). The algae palm kelp (Laminaria hyperborea) and sugar kelp (Saccharina latissima) have been particularly well described and researched.
In Asia, where algae are a staple food, age-related macular degeneration was virtually non-existent until the 1980s when lifestyles and diets became more westernized.

ALGAE AND FUCOVISION
Preparations made from algae are currently being developed. It will take some time before they are ready for the market. Some maritime algae contain very high amounts of iodine. If algae or preparations containing algae are consumed regularly, care must be taken not to exceed the recommended daily amount of 150 micrograms for adults.
A proprietary formula made from AREDS micronutrients and the algae sugar kelp and palm kelp has now been developed for Fucovision. The iodine content is being carefully checked. This already enables long-term consumption of the algae described as beneficial with the micronutrients recommended for maintaining eye health.
Dietary supplements are not a substitute for a balanced and varied diet and a healthy lifestyle.
