Zeolites (from the Greek zeein, meaning "to boil," and lithos, meaning "stone") are a group of minerals
containing alkali and/or alkaline earth cations in the form of a regular lattice structure.
This natural mineral originated several million years ago when volcanic ash was deposited on coastlines near the sea. The combination of the volcanic ash and the sodium-rich water caused a chemical reaction that ultimately led to the formation of natural zeolite. Depending on its location, this natural mineral exhibits different compositions with varying properties. The cations and water molecules trapped within the pores possess a high degree of mobility and therefore exhibit a pronounced capacity for ion exchange and reversible sorption.
