Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin. The body cannot produce or store it itself, so it relies on regular intake through food. It is involved in many important metabolic processes and protects cells from free radicals. Among other things, vitamin C contributes to the normal function of the immune and nervous systems and is needed for the formation of connective tissue.

The buffered form of vitamin C contains 500 mg of pure vitamin C per capsule, which is released over a longer period of time thanks to the sustained-release capsule and can therefore be better absorbed by the body.

Vitamin C supports:

• the normal function of the immune system
• the normal function of the nervous system
• normal energy metabolism
• protection against oxidative stress and free radicals
• the reduction of tiredness and fatigue
• collagen formation
• iron absorption in the body

What makes our Vitamin C special:

• High dosage
• Acid-free
• Vegan
• Good absorption

Foods containing vitamin C

Citrus fruits, especially oranges, lemons, and grapefruits, are among the classic main sources of vitamin C. Several vegetables, such as broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and kale, as well as rosehips and sea buckthorn, also have a high vitamin C content. In addition, there are some more exotic vitamin C powerhouses, such as the fruit of the camu camu shrub or the acerola cherry.

Vitamin C deficiency

The body can usually meet its vitamin C needs through food. Vitamin C deficiency is practically nonexistent in healthy individuals. The body's own reserves typically last for two to six weeks. After that, a deficiency can develop.

In the past, vitamin C deficiency was particularly common among seafarers who suffered from scurvy after long periods on board a ship.

Natural Vitamin C

Vitamin C is very sensitive to heat and long storage times. Therefore, much of the natural vitamin is lost during cooking. It is best to process foods promptly and heat them only briefly. Raw foods contain the most vitamin C.

Vitamin C overdose

Normally, the body simply excretes excess vitamin C via the kidneys, as vitamin C is not stored. Only a massive overdose of the vitamin in addition to food can lead to digestive problems such as cramps and diarrhea.

Vitamin C daily requirement

The German Nutrition Society (DGV) recommends an average daily intake of 100 milligrams for adults. Smokers have a higher need for vitamin C, as nicotine inhibits the body's absorption of the vitamin.
