Indication/ BROMHEXINE 12 BC oral drops, Bromhexine hydrochloride Application

• The medicine is a bronchosecretolytic (medicine to loosen mucus in respiratory diseases with thick mucus).
• It is used for expectorant treatment in acute and chronic diseases of the bronchi and lungs with viscous mucus.

• Always take this medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• dosage
  • The dosage is based on the information in the table below.
    • Adults and young people over 14 years of age
      • 3 x daily 16 - 33 drops (equivalent to 24 - 48 mg bromhexine hydrochloride daily)
    • Children and adolescents between the ages of 6 and 14 and patients weighing less than 50 kg
      • 16 drops 3 x daily (equivalent to 24 mg bromhexine hydrochloride daily)
    • Children from 2 to 6 years
      • 8 drops 3 x daily (equivalent to 12 mg bromhexine hydrochloride daily)
  • In the case of impaired kidney function or severe liver disease, this medicine should be taken at greater intervals or at a reduced dose. Please ask your doctor about this.
• Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect is too strong or too weak.

• duration of use
  • The duration of use depends on the type and severity of the disease and should be decided by the attending physician.
  • If your condition worsens or does not improve after 4-5 days, you should consult a doctor.

• If you take more than you should
  • In the event of an overdose, there are usually no signs of illness that go beyond the normal side effects to be expected. If there are severe signs of illness, monitoring of the circulatory system and, if necessary, treatment based on the signs of illness may be necessary.
  • If an infant has swallowed significant amounts, please contact the nearest physician.

• If you forget to take a dose
  • Do not take a double dose to make up for a forgotten dose. Continue taking as instructed in the dosing instructions.

• Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
• If you are affected by any of the side effects listed below, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
• Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 people)
  • Hypersensitivity reactions: skin rash, swelling of the skin and mucous membranes (angioedema), shortness of breath, itching, hives (urticaria)
  • fever
  • Nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea
• Very rare side effects (may affect up to 1 in 10,000 people)
  • anaphylactic reaction up to shock (severe form of hypersensitivity reaction)
  • Occurrence of severe skin reactions such as Steven-Johnson syndrome and Lyell's syndrome in temporal relation to the use of bromhexine
• If the first signs of a hypersensitivity reaction appear or new skin and mucous membrane changes occur, the drug must not be taken again. In this case, please contact the nearest available doctor immediately.
• If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

interactions

• Use together with other medicines
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are using, have recently used or might use any other medicines.
  • The combined use of bromhexine and cough suppressants (antitussives) can result in a dangerous accumulation of secretion due to the restricted cough reflex, so that the indication for this combination treatment should be determined with particular care.
  • When using drugs that cause irritation in the gastrointestinal tract, an increase in irritation of the gastric mucosa is possible.

Contraindications

• The medicine must not be taken
  • if you are allergic to bromhexine hydrochloride or any of the other ingredients of this medicine.
  • of patients with bronchial asthma or other respiratory diseases associated with marked hypersensitivity of the airways. Inhaling the medicine can cause shortness of breath or trigger an asthma attack.
  • of infants and young children under 2 years of age (risk of laryngeal spasm).

pregnancy and breast feeding period

• If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, think you may be pregnant or are planning to have a baby, ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before taking this medicine.
• pregnancy
  • There is no experience with the use of this drug during pregnancy in humans, so the drug may only be taken during pregnancy after a strict benefit-risk assessment by the doctor and is not recommended in the first trimester of pregnancy.
• lactation
  • The drug passes into breast milk. Since the effect on the infant has not been sufficiently investigated, the preparation should not be taken while breastfeeding.

• Warnings and Precautions
  • Severe skin reactions such as Steven-Johnson syndrome and Lyell's syndrome have been reported very rarely in temporal relation to the use of the medicinal product. If new skin and mucous membrane changes occur, medical advice should therefore be sought immediately and the application stopped.
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine
    • if you have or have ever had a stomach or duodenal ulcer, as the medicine can affect the mucosal barrier of the stomach and intestines.
    • in some rare diseases of the bronchi associated with excessive accumulation of secretions (e.g. malignant ciliary syndrome). In these cases, the drug should only be used under medical supervision because of a possible build-up of secretions.
    • if you have impaired kidney function or severe liver disease (the medicine is then taken at larger dose intervals or at a reduced dose on doctor's orders). In the case of severely impaired renal function, an accumulation of the breakdown products formed in the liver must be expected.
  • Liver function should be monitored occasionally, particularly during long-term treatment.

• Ability to drive and use machines
  • The drug has no or negligible influence on the ability to drive and use machines.
