• The preparation is a germicidal agent (antiseptic) for use on skin and wounds.
• The ointment is repeatedly used for a limited period of time for the antiseptic wound treatment of damaged skin (e.g. pressure sores, leg ulcers), superficial wounds, burns, infected and superinfected skin diseases.

• Always use this medicine exactly as described or as your doctor or pharmacist has told you. Check with your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
• The recommended dose is (unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor):
  • Apply the ointment evenly to the damaged area one or more times a day. If necessary, a bandage can then be applied.
  • The brown color of the ointment is a property of the preparation and indicates its effectiveness. Increasing discoloration indicates a decrease in the effectiveness of the preparation. If the color is completely removed, it is no longer effective. If you notice that the ointment has largely discolored, you should reapply the ointment.

• duration of use
  • The use of the preparation should be continued as long as there are still signs of inflammation. If your symptoms have not improved after regular use for 2 to 5 days or if symptoms reappear after completing treatment, please consult your doctor.

• If you use more than you should
  • Please contact your doctor, especially if you notice any of the symptoms listed in the "Side effects" category.
  • The ointment is for external use only. If you accidentally swallow a large amount, please contact your doctor immediately.
  • In this case, the following symptoms of acute iodine poisoning can occur:
    • Abdominal pain and cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, drop in blood pressure, circulatory collapse, tachycardia, tendency to bleed, lack of oxygen (purple discoloration of the skin and mucous membranes), kidney dysfunction, urinary retention, sensitivity disorders of the nerves, seizures, fever, larynx swelling and pulmonary edema.

    • Acute general allergic reactions, possibly with drop in blood pressure and/or shortness of breath (anaphylactic reactions);
    • Hyperthyroidism (iodine-induced hyperthyroidism), possibly with symptoms such as B. increased heart rate or agitation in patients with thyroid disorders*;
    • Acute swelling of the skin or mucous membranes (angioedema).

• When using the preparation with other medicines
  • Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking/using, have recently taken/used or might take/use any other medicines.
  • Povidone-iodine can be combined with protein and various other organic substances such as e.g. B. react blood and pus components, which can affect its effectiveness.
  • The effect of both drugs is weakened with the simultaneous use of
    • enzymatic wound treatment agents
    • hydrogen peroxide
    • taurolidine
    • disinfectants containing silver or wound dressings containing silver
  • Do not use the ointment at the same time or for a short time afterwards with preparations containing mercury, as under certain circumstances a substance can form from iodine and mercury that damages the skin.
  • Do not use the ointment simultaneously with or immediately after using disinfectants with the active substance octenidine on the same or adjacent areas. Otherwise, temporary dark discolouration may occur there.
  • If you are being treated with lithium preparations, you should avoid prolonged and/or widespread use as this may promote the induction of hypothyroidism.
  • Influencing diagnostic tests or radioiodine therapy
    • This preparation can provide false-positive results with various diagnostics (including toluidine and guaiac resin for determining hemoglobin or glucose in stool or urine).
    • It can interfere with diagnostic examinations of the thyroid gland (thyroid scintigraphy, PBI determination, radioiodine diagnostics) and make planned radioiodine therapy impossible. You should wait 4 weeks after stopping treatment before taking a new scintigram.

Contraindications

• The drug must not be used
  • if you are allergic to povidone iodine or any of the other ingredients of this medicine,
  • if you have an overactive thyroid gland (hyperthyroidism) or another existing (manifest) thyroid disease,
  • if you have the very rare chronic skin inflammation dermatitis herpetiformis Duhring,
  • before, during and after the use of radioiodine as part of radiotherapy or a diagnostic examination,
  • if you use preparations containing mercury at the same time.

pregnancy and breast feeding period

• Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using any medicine.
• During pregnancy and lactation, the drug is to be used only on the express instructions of the doctor and is extremely limited. In this case, it is necessary to check the thyroid function in the child.
• Ingestion of the ointment by the infant through the mouth through contact with the treated part of the nursing mother's body must be avoided.

• Warnings and Precautions
  • Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using this ointment.
  • If you suffer from thyroid disease or you have a goiter, you should only use the product over a long period of time and over a large area (e.g. over 10% of the body surface and longer than 14 days) if expressly instructed by your doctor.
  • Even after the end of therapy (up to 3 months), early symptoms of possible hyperthyroidism should be observed. Your doctor may monitor thyroid function if necessary.
  • Elderly people
    • Since older people are more likely to suffer from thyroid dysfunction, older people (over 65 years of age) should only use this preparation over a large area and over a longer period of time if expressly instructed by their doctor. If necessary, your doctor will monitor your thyroid function.
  • Patients with impaired renal function
    • Long-term use in patients with impaired renal function should be avoided. Monitoring of thyroid function should be considered.
