For pain relief from osteoarthritis.
What is DUROLANE?
DUROLANE is a treatment using a single injection to relieve pain from osteoarthritis. It is based on a natural, safe and proven technology called NASHA (stabilized hyaluronic acid). Hyaluronic acid (HS) is a naturally occurring molecule that provides lubrication and shock absorption in healthy joints.
DUROLANE is a clear gel with high concentrations of HS (hyaluronic acid). It is injected into the joints affected by osteoarthritis to relieve pain, restore lubrication and shock-absorbing properties, thereby improving joint function and restoring quality of life. The stabilized form of HS in DUROLANE is known as NASHA.
How safe is treatment with DUROLANE?
For DUROLANE, hyaluronic acid is processed in a highly developed, patented process called NASHA technology. This creates a highly purified product that is made without the use of animal raw materials, so the risk of contamination is virtually eliminated. DUROLANE is treated by the body in the same way as the body's own hyaluronic acid and there are no known immunological or anaphylactic reactions. The DUROLANE original single-use injection has been available since 2001.
How can one injection be enough when other hyaluronic acid preparations require 3 to 5 injections per treatment cycle?
The patented NASHA hyaluronic acid stabilization process makes DUROLANE resistant to degradation and retains its effectiveness longer than all other hyaluronic acid preparations1-4. DUROLANE also contains a high proportion of concentrated hyaluronic acid. This significantly extends the residence time of DUROLANE, while the HS in other hyaluronic acid products is broken down within a few days after injection.
This is the main reason why DUROLANE only requires a single injection, while other preparations require multiple injections.
How does DUROLANE work?
DUROLANE contains a high proportion of concentrated hyaluronic acid, which mimics the effect of natural hyaluronic acid. DUROLANE restores the natural level of HS that has decreased as osteoarthritis progresses. Hyaluronic acid is known for its pain-relieving and viscoelastic properties and can have a cushioning, shock-absorbing effect in the joint. HS is also known to help maintain normal fluid balance in the joint and restore normal joint function.
Is my illness serious enough for this treatment?
If you suffer from osteoarthritis and cannot control the pain with simple painkillers and lifestyle changes, you may be a candidate for treatment with DUROLANE. To find out whether DUROLANE is right for you, please consult your doctor.
Can I be treated with DUROLANE in both knees?
Yes. However, you will need an injection in each knee.
Can my hip joint arthrosis also be treated with DUROLANE?
Yes. The effectiveness of DUROLANE has been proven for osteoarthritis in the hip joint as well as in the knee joint.
How is the treatment carried out? The entire treatment is carried out in the doctor's treatment room and takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. DUROLANE is administered through a single injection
into the knee joint.
Is that painful?
Many doctors use a local anesthetic before administering DUROLANE to minimize any discomfort.
Can the treatment be repeated?
Yes. The treatment can be repeated if necessary in consultation with your doctor.
How effective is the treatment?
The pain-relieving effect of intra-articular hyaluronic acid is comparable to the effect of medical pain therapies or the injection of corticosteroids; however, it lasts longer.
