Folic acid deficiency, FOLSAN 5 mg tablets Application:
This medicine is a vitamin
It is used for:
- Therapy of folic acid deficiency states that cannot be corrected through diet
- Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns through preventative treatment of women at increased risk (e.g. if a child has previously been born with a neural tube defect or in women who suffer from seizures and are being treated with antiepileptic drugs). Taking folic acid is also recommended with a wholesome diet.
- Treatment of increased levels of homocysteine in the blood caused by folic acid deficiency.
Homocysteinemia can only be treated with folic acid if a vitamin B12 deficiency has been ruled out.
Note: This medicine contains lactose and sucrose.

Dosage :
- Always take the medicine exactly as your doctor has told you. Please ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are not sure.
-
Unless otherwise prescribed by the doctor, the usual dose is
-
Treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood:
- Depending on your needs, 1 to 3 tablets (corresponding to 5 to 15 mg folic acid) per day.
-
Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns:
- It is recommended that pregnant women and women who want to have children take one tablet daily (corresponding to 5 mg folic acid).
- In women with seizure disorders (epilepsy) who are being treated with antiepileptic drugs, the concentration of this medicine in the blood must be carefully monitored.
- Please talk to your doctor or pharmacist if you have the impression that the effect of the medicine is too strong or too weak.

Duration of application
-
Treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood:
- The duration of treatment depends on the extent of the folic acid deficiency and depends on the clinical picture and, if necessary, on the corresponding laboratory diagnostic measurements and is determined by the doctor for each patient.
-
Prevention of neural tube defects in newborns:
- It is important that you start taking the tablets before you become pregnant (preferably four weeks before). The treatment should then be continued for the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
-
Treatment of folic acid deficiency and increased homocysteine concentration in the blood:
-
If you take more of the medicine than you should:
- With occasional higher doses, no overdose symptoms are to be expected.
- However, patients with seizure disorders may experience an increase in the tendency to convulsions.
- At high doses (over 15 mg per day and for more than four weeks), bitter taste, loss of appetite, nausea, bloating, nightmares, agitation and depression may occur.
- In these cases you should contact your doctor.
-
If you forget to take the medicine:
- Do not take a double dose if you forget to take the previous dose, but continue taking the tablets as normal.
-
If you stop taking the medicine:
- Before you decide to stop taking the tablets on your own, talk to your doctor about it. Continuous intake is required to prevent neural tube defects in newborns.
- If you have any further questions about using the medicine, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
Way :
- The tablets are taken whole with meals with sufficient liquid.

Like all medicines, this medicine can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them.

Significant side effects or signs to look out for and actions to take if affected:
-
If you experience any of the side effects listed below, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
-
Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract:
-
Rarely:
- Gastrointestinal disorders at very high doses. If 5-fluorouracil is administered at the same time, high doses of folic acid can lead to mucosal intoxication (e.g. in the form of severe diarrhea) (see “Interactions” category).
-
Rarely:
-
Immune system diseases:
-
In individual cases:
- Hypersensitivity reactions e.g. B. in the form of skin redness (erythema), itching, shortness of breath (bronchospasm), nausea or circulatory collapse (anaphylactic shock).
-
In individual cases:
-
Psychiatric illnesses:
- Rare: sleep disorders, agitation and depression at very high doses.

Diseases of the gastrointestinal tract:

If you experience any of the side effects listed below, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor as soon as possible.
- Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if any of the side effects listed seriously affects you or if you notice side effects that are not listed.
- If you notice any side effects, contact your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.
Interactions :
-
When taken with other medicines:
- Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking or have recently taken any other medicines, even if they are non-prescription medicines.
- Treatment with anti-seizure medications (anticonvulsants) can lead to an increase in the tendency to convulsions.
- When high doses are administered, it cannot be ruled out that folic acid and folic acid inhibitors administered at the same time (folic acid antagonists), such as: B. certain drugs against bacterial infections or malaria (trimethoprim, proguanil, pyrimethamine) and methotrexate (active ingredient for the treatment of tumors, among other things), inhibit each other's effects.
- The simultaneous administration of high doses of folic acid with 5-fluorouracil (an agent used to treat tumors) causes an increase in the effectiveness and also the toxicity of 5-fluorouracil. Severe diarrhea may occur.
- Chloramphenicol (an active ingredient used to treat infections) may prevent the response to treatment with folic acid and should therefore not be given to patients with severe folic acid deficiency symptoms.
Contraindications :
-
The medicine must not be taken
- if you are hypersensitive (allergic) to folic acid or any of the other ingredients of the medicine.
- if there is anemia due to impaired development of red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), as the increase in young red blood cells (reticulocytes) caused by folic acid administration can mask a vitamin B12 deficiency. Because of the risk of irreversible neurological disorders, before treating anemia it is important to ensure that it is not due to a vitamin B12 deficiency. The cause of megaloblastic anemia must be clarified before therapy begins.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding :
- There are no known risks for doses of up to 5 mg folic acid per day. Folic acid must not be used in doses higher than 5 mg per day during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Patient information :
-
Particular caution is required when taking the medicine
- if there is a risk of megaloblastic anemia due to vitamin B12 deficiency.
- Even in the case of life-threatening megaloblastic anemia, a possible vitamin B12 deficiency must be ruled out before starting therapy due to the risk of permanent damage to the nervous system (ensuring serum and erythrocyte samples and determining the vitamin B12 content).
-
Ability to drive and use machines:
- No effects are expected in terms of impairment of the ability to drive or use machines.
