The urovaginal microflora is characterized by a complex microbial ecosystem. This promotes the physiological defense against bacterial infections and infections caused by Candida (fungi). The pH value of normal vaginal secretions is between 3.8 and 4.5.

The acidity is maintained by normal levels of estrogen as well as the resident bacterial microflora. The bacterial microflora that colonizes the vaginal mucous membrane consists mainly of lactobacilli (Döderlein flora).
