Already knew?
The common horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a species of plant in the genus Horse chestnut (Aesculus) that is native to the Balkans and widespread in Central Europe. The tree can reach a height of up to 30 m and an age of 300 years. From the middle of the 17th century onwards, cinchona was used in Europe to treat intermittent fevers. Since the bark was very expensive at the time, a replacement with a similar effect was sought. During this search it was discovered that the horse chestnut, which was already native at the time, could have a similar effect if used correctly, which is why it was used accordingly in the next decades. The most important active ingredient in horse chestnut is aescin, which is a mixture of more than 30 different saponins. Aescin has a vaso-strengthening effect, anticoagulant and anti-inflammatory. This can be achieved, among other things, by sealing the vessel walls of the veins, modifying their permeability in order to reduce the outflow of fluid into the tissue and to accelerate the drainage of water retention from the tissue. In addition, horse chestnut can strengthen the immune system, improve physical well-being, maintain healthy skin and protect against stomach-irritating substances. In various studies, the fight against blood accumulation in the extremities due to the venotrophic effect of aescin was analyzed in more detail.1,2 In these studies, a reduction in leg swelling and varicose veins was also observed by taking horse chestnut extract.1,2 This can be achieved, among other things, by sealing the vessel walls of the veins, modifying their permeability in order to reduce the outflow of fluid into the tissue and to accelerate the drainage of water retention from the tissue.
