Lactulose is an indigestible double sugar made from milk sugar. The constipation agent contained in the lactulose syrup draws water into the intestines, which softens the intestinal contents. In the large intestine, the agent can be broken down by the bacteria located there. The resulting breakdown products such as lactic acid and acetic acid have a laxative effect: They stimulate bowel movements and thereby facilitate bowel movements.

Adults take 7.5-15ml LACTULOSE solution STADA 1-2 times a day if they are constipated. The usual dose for children is 4.5-9 ml 1-2 times a day.
Larger doses of LACTULOSE solution STADA are often required, especially at the beginning of the treatment of constipation. In general, this slightly higher starting dose can be reduced after 3-4 days.
