Side Cascara bark effects

  • Like all medicines, the preparation can cause side effects, although not everybody gets them.
  • The frequency of side effects is based on the following categories:
    • Very common: affects more than 1 in 10 people
    • Common: affects 1 to 10 users in 100
    • Uncommon: affects 1 to 10 users in 1,000
    • Rare: affects 1 to 10 users in 10,000
    • Very rare: less than 1 user in 10,000
    • Not known: frequency cannot be estimated from the available data
  • Possible side effects:
    • Spasmodic gastrointestinal complaints can very rarely occur. In these cases the dose must be reduced. The urine may become harmless red in the course of treatment.
    • Long-term use or higher doses (misuse) can lead to disturbances of the water and salt balance.
    • If diarrhea occurs, it can lead to a loss of potassium. The loss of potassium can lead to cardiac disorders and muscle weakness, especially if you take cardiac glycosides (medicines that strengthen the heart muscle), diuretics (medicines that increase urine output) and cortisone and cortisone-like substances (adrenal steroids) at the same time.
    • Long-term use can lead to the excretion of protein and blood in the urine. Furthermore, discoloration of the intestinal mucosa (pseudomelanosis coli) can occur, which usually regresses after discontinuation of the preparation.
  • If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.

  • Taking with other medicines
    • With prolonged use or abuse, potassium deficiency can increase the effect of certain drugs that strengthen the heart muscle (cardiac glycosides) and influence the effect of agents against cardiac arrhythmias (antiarrhythmics). Potassium losses can be increased by the simultaneous use of certain drugs that increase urine excretion (diuretics), cortisone and cortisone-like substances (adrenal steroids) or liquorice root.
    • Please inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking / using or have recently taken / used any other medicines, including medicines obtained without a prescription.

  • The medicine must not be taken:
    • If you are allergic to cascara bark or any of the other ingredients of the medicine,
    • in intestinal obstruction, appendicitis, chronic inflammatory bowel diseases such as Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis;
    • for abdominal pain of unknown cause as well as severe dehydration with water and salt losses.
    • Children under the age of 12 should not take the drops.
    • Due to inadequate toxicological studies, the preparation should not be taken during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
  • If certain drugs that strengthen the heart muscle (cardiac glycosides), drugs against cardiac arrhythmias (antiarrhythmics), drugs that increase urinary excretion (diuretics), cortisone and cortisone-like substances (adrenal cortex steroids) and licorice root are taken at the same time, the drops may only be used after consulting the Be taken by a doctor.
