Lutein and Zeaxanthin are plant carotenoids that are not systematized by the human body and must be obtained through food. They are found in many green leafy plants and flowering fruits and vegetables. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the two main components of the retinal macula. Lutein and Zeaxanthin are the only carotenoids found in both the macula and the lens of the human eye, and have a dual function: they act as powerful antioxidants and help form a protective layer that filters light and maintains photoreceptor function in the macula.
Beta-carotene is found in carrots, peppers, pumpkins and many other fruits and vegetables with orange, yellow and red colors, as well as in leafy vegetables with dark green color. Taken in the body from one molecule of Beta-carotene, two molecules of retinol are formed, and the body converts only as much of it as it needs. Beta-carotene (provitamin A) helps to protect membrane lipids and other substances from oxidation, which takes place under the influence of free radicals. Provitamin A supports the function of the body's immune system and is important for the cell as a component of the visual purpura rhodopsin.
Vitamin E protects cells from oxidative stress, which is especially important for retinal cells.
