Your mineral for muscles 1 , bones 2 & more

Magnesium is particularly important for the body

Magnesium is considered a vital mineral and our body cannot produce it itself. Magnesium is particularly well known among athletes, but not only athletes can benefit from a targeted intake of magnesium.

Magnesium is needed for over 600 metabolic processes. The human organism needs more magnesium, especially in growth and development phases, but also during exertion. Adults generally have a magnesium requirement of 300-400 mg per day. However, the daily intake of magnesium from food is often insufficient, since many consumers have an unbalanced diet and sometimes have increased nutritional needs.

Magnesium contributes to the normal functioning of muscles (including the heart muscle) and the nervous system. It ensures the correct balance of electrolytes in the body and that other minerals are well distributed in the body. Muscles, healthy bones and the interaction of muscles with the nervous system are promoted by magnesium.

In order to be able to fulfill the various tasks in the body, magnesium must be ingested through food or supplied to the body in sufficient quantities on a daily basis. A sufficient magnesium supply contributes to the reduction of tiredness and exhaustion and supports the maintenance of psychological functions, such as e.g. B. the ability to concentrate. Magnesium also has a function in cell division and contributes to the maintenance of normal teeth.

Magnesium and its nutritional effects at a glance:

  • 1 Magnesium promotes normal muscle function
  • 2 Magnesium supports the maintenance of normal bones
  • Magnesium helps reduce tiredness and fatigue
  • Magnesium promotes normal energy metabolism
  • Magnesium supports normal functioning of the nervous system
  • Magnesium contributes to normal mental function
  • Magnesium promotes the electrolyte balance
  • Magnesium supports cell division
  • Magnesium promotes the maintenance of normal teeth

Magnesium deficiency due to an unbalanced diet
It is often the case that we eat an unbalanced diet in our mostly stressful everyday life, e.g. B. through fast/convenience food. But diets can also be unbalanced. This can result in a situation of shortage. Deficiency situations can also arise, for example, as a result of (competitive) sport or regular consumption of alcohol.

When is a magnesium supplement recommended?

athlete
During sports, the muscles are particularly stressed. Through exertion and sweating, the body uses up important minerals, including magnesium. Performance and muscle functions can be impaired as a result. If a sufficient intake of magnesium through diet alone is not possible, dietary supplements can compensate for the increased need for magnesium.

Older people
Older people often have to contend with an increased need for magnesium, which can be felt e.g. B. at night in the muscles. Physical activity and, in most cases, food intake tend to decrease with increasing age. As a result, less magnesium is often absorbed. However, the body's need for magnesium remains the same, so a targeted supply makes sense.

diabetic
Diabetics often excrete more magnesium through the kidneys. This usually results in an increased need for magnesium.

People who are mentally stressed and who work hard physically

People who are mentally stressed or who do heavy physical work (e.g. at work) may need an increased magnesium intake.

Pregnant and breastfeeding women
The muscles of the uterus and the muscles in general should be well supplied with magnesium during pregnancy. During breastfeeding, there is an increased need for magnesium, since the child is also supplied with it through breast milk.

traveler
People who travel a lot for private or professional reasons often do not have the opportunity to get enough magnesium through their diet.

Adolescents and young adults
Magnesium requirements are increased during the growth and development phase. Therefore, a good magnesium supply is particularly useful here.

In these life situations, the targeted intake of magnesium is recommended in addition to a balanced diet with magnesium-rich foods.
