- In the case of high doses, stools may become soft, but they are harmless, or gastrointestinal irritation.
-
Significant side effects or signs to look out for and actions to be taken if they are affected
- If diarrhea occurs, treatment should be temporarily interrupted; after stool normalization, treatment can be continued with a reduced daily dose.
- In the case of high doses and long-term use, symptoms of fatigue can occur, especially with impaired kidney function. This can be an indication that an increased magnesium concentration in the blood has already been reached. In this case you should reduce the dose or temporarily stop the medicine.
- If you get any side effects, talk to your doctor or pharmacist. This also applies to side effects that are not specified.
MAGNETRANS extra Magnesium deficiency
Interactions
-
Use with other medicines
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently used, or may use any other medicines.
- The preparation should not be taken at the same time as iron, fluorides or tetracyclines (certain antibiotics), since mutual hindrance of absorption in the intestine (enteral absorption) can occur. An interval of 2 to 3 hours should therefore be observed between the intake of magnesium and iron, fluoride or tetracycline preparations.
- Aminoquinolines (against malaria), quinidine and related substances (for cardiac arrhythmias), nitrofurantoin (antibiotic) and penicillamine (for rheumatism) should not be used at the same time as magnesium preparations due to the mutual influence of absorption in the body.
- Magnesium should be used with caution if you are also taking medicines such as antacids (for heartburn) or laxatives containing magnesium salts. This is especially true if you have impaired kidney function.
- If preparations containing aluminum are taken at the same time (e.g. anti-heartburn remedies; antacids), the aluminum uptake in the body may be increased.
- Certain antibiotics (aminoglycoside antibiotics), cisplatin (agent to inhibit cell growth or cell division; cytostatic) and ciclosporin A (to weaken the immune response, e.g. after organ transplants) can lead to an increased excretion of magnesium via the kidneys and thus to a reduced effect of the capsules.
- The simultaneous use of magnesium and certain antibiotics (aminoglycoside antibiotics) can lead to a deterioration in the autonomic muscle function, e.g. the respiratory muscles (difficult breathing).
- The preparation can increase the effect of certain substances (e.g. pancuronium bromide, succinylcholine halide) that are given to induce anesthesia.
- The simultaneous administration of calcium and phosphate can lead to a reduced effect of magnesium.
-
The effect of the following drugs can be weakened by the preparation:
- Sympathomimetics (cold and heart drugs)
- Cardiac glycosides (heart medicines).
MAGNETRANS extra Magnesium deficiency Contraindications
-
The medicine must not be taken
- if you are allergic to magnesium oxide or any of the other ingredients
- if you have severe kidney problems
- if you suffer from myasthenia gravis (weak muscles)
- if you are prone to (calcium) magnesium ammonium phosphate stones (certain kidney stones)
- if you suffer from conduction disorder between the auricle and the ventricle (AV block)
- in case of significant water and salt losses (desiccosis).
- If necessary, your doctor should check by measuring the salts (electrolytes) in the blood, whether there is a contraindication due to the situation of your mineral balance, such as magnesium excess (hypermagnesaemia) or potassium excess (hyperkalaemia).
pregnancy and breast feeding period
- Ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice before using this medicine if you are pregnant or breast-feeding, if you suspect you may be pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
- There are no contraindications to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
- There are no reports of harmful effects during pregnancy / breastfeeding in humans. However, human experience with the use of magnesium in early pregnancy is very limited.
- If magnesium is administered shortly before birth, the newborn should be monitored by a doctor for signs of harmful effects (such as depressed breathing, muscle weakness) during the first 24 to 48 hours of life.
