L-carnitine with high-quality L-carnitine tartrate. L-carnitine plays an essential role in energy metabolism in the human body.

product knowledge

L-carnitine is a substance produced by the body itself from certain amino acids. L-carnitine plays an essential role in energy metabolism in the human body and can therefore improve physical performance. L-carnitine is a water-soluble molecule that the human organism can produce from the two essential amino acids lysine and methionine. It is also a component of animal foods and is mostly absorbed through a non-vegetarian diet.

L-carnitine plays an important role in fat metabolism and ensures that fatty acids are absorbed into the mitochondria, the so-called "power plants" of the cells, where they are converted into energy. The mitochondria produce energy from the food components for all body cells in the form of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This energy can also be obtained specifically from fatty acids. To do this, however, they must first be introduced into the mitochondria using L-carnitine. The fatty acids can then be burned there and converted into ATP.

L-carnitine accumulates mainly in the heart tissue and skeletal muscles, as it is needed in the body primarily where there is an increased energy requirement. Here it ensures trouble-free and continuous performance. The heart muscle, for example, covers up to 80 percent of its energy requirements from the breakdown of fatty acids. L-carnitine thus supports the natural metabolism and ensures that the energy-consuming regeneration of cells and tissue runs smoothly. With a balanced diet, healthy adults generally do not need any additional L-carnitine. Pork and beef, dairy products and mushrooms contain relatively high amounts of this nutrient. The first signs of an inadequate carnitine supply are usually non-specific and often go unnoticed. Reduced performance, rapid fatigue and fat deposits in the tissue can be the consequences of a latent undersupply. In addition to the rare systemic carnitine deficiency caused by disorders in the body's own synthesis, a secondary carnitine deficiency is far more common. This can occur due to reduced carnitine intake through food (for example in vegetarians), reduced biosynthesis due to a lack of certain co-factors (such as iron), certain diseases such as liver cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus or the regular intake of certain medications. Monitoring carnitine status is particularly important in people with kidney damage or advanced renal insufficiency.

L-carnitine is needed in increased amounts during certain phases of life when the body uses more energy. This occurs, for example, in childhood, pregnancy and breastfeeding. Athletes who need a lot of energy and are exposed to high levels of stress also benefit from a targeted intake of L-carnitine.
