SKIN BARRIER FUNCTION
The skin barrier is primarily formed by the horny layer. Normally the skin is protected by a stable combination of horn cells and lipids. If this bond is disrupted, the skin becomes permeable and there is a loss of moisture. As a result, the skin becomes dry, sensitive and is less protected from external influences. Neurodermatitis is one of the most common chronic inflammatory skin diseases. On average, 13% of children and 1–3% of adults are affected. The disease manifests itself through recurring eczema, mostly in the area of the wrists, elbows and hollows of the knees, is accompanied by severe itching and can enormously impair the quality of life. The top priority in atopic dermatitis is to keep the skin from drying out and to alleviate the symptoms.
BASIC RULES ON CARE
The sensitive neurodermatitis skin therefore needs appropriate care in order to stabilize the disturbed skin barrier. In this way, flare-ups can be delayed or lessened. It is advisable to shower as short as possible and not too hot and then dab the skin without rubbing. After showering, the skin should be well moisturized, whereby only soap-free and pH-neutral products should be used, which are free of possible allergens (fragrances, dyes, or preservatives) and have a strong moisturizing effect.
