Natural treatment for osteoporosis, CALCIMED D3 500 mg, 1000 IU chewable tablets interactions
-
Taking the chewable tablets with other medicines
- Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking, have recently taken or might take any other medicines.
- Simultaneous treatment with digitalis glycosides (cardiac glycosides from foxgloves) can lead to cardiac arrhythmia. Strict medical control including an ECG examination and control of the calcium blood level is therefore necessary.
- If diuretics from the thiazide group of substances (water tablets) are administered at the same time, the calcium level in the blood should be checked regularly, since thiazides restrict the excretion of calcium in the urine.
- The absorption and thus the effectiveness of certain antibiotics (so-called tetracyclines) is reduced by the simultaneous administration of this drug. These medicines should be taken at least 2 hours before or 4-6 hours after this medicine.
- In addition, interactions with other medicines such as B. sodium fluoride (used to harden tooth enamel or to treat osteoporosis) and bisphosphonates (used to treat osteoporosis). These preparations should therefore be taken at least 3 hours before this medicine.
- Between giving cholestyramine (a drug used to lower high cholesterol) or laxatives such as B. Paraffin oil and this drug should be kept as long as possible, otherwise vitamin D cannot be properly absorbed.
- Taking this medicine at the same time as phenytoin (a medicine used to treat epilepsy) or barbiturates (hypnotics) may make vitamin D less effective.
- Simultaneous administration of this medicine and glucocorticoids (e.g. cortisone) can lead to a reduced effect of vitamin D and reduced blood calcium levels.
- The additional intake of calcium and vitamin D should only be done under medical supervision and requires regular monitoring of the calcium levels in the blood and urine.
- Calcium may reduce the effect of levothyroxine (used to treat thyroid deficiency). For this reason, levothyroxine should be taken at least 4 hours before or 4 hours after this medicine.
- The effect of quinolone antibiotics can be reduced if they are taken at the same time as calcium. Quinolone antibiotics should be taken 2 hours before or 6 hours after this medicine.
-
Take with food and drink
- You can take the chewable tablets at any time of the day, regardless of meals.
- Please note that oxalic acid (found in spinach and rhubarb) and phytic acid (found in whole grain products) can reduce calcium absorption in the intestine. You should not take medicines containing calcium for 2 hours before and after eating foods with a high content of oxalic or phytic acid.

Calcium levels in the blood and urine and your kidney function must be monitored regularly during long-term therapy. This is especially important if you are prone to kidney stone formation. If necessary, depending on your
blood levels, your doctor may reduce the dose or interrupt the treatment. - If you are being treated concomitantly with cardiac glycosides or thiazide diuretics (water tablets) for heart problems, the levels of calcium in your blood and urine and your kidney function must be monitored regularly. If necessary, depending on your blood levels, your doctor may reduce the dose or interrupt the treatment.
- If you have kidney problems, you should take the medicine with particular caution. Your blood and urine calcium levels will need to be monitored. If you have severe kidney problems, take other forms of vitamin D instead of colecalciferol.

Milk-alkali syndrome is a calcium metabolism disorder with an increase in the calcium level in the blood (hypercalcaemia), hypoacidity of the blood (metabolic alkalosis), kidney failure and soft tissue calcification. Therefore, an additional administration of the drug may only be carried out under strict medical supervision with regular monitoring of the calcium levels in the blood and urine.
