Otovent® System Replacement Balloons
Otovent® is a nasal balloon for ventilating the Eustachian tube to relieve negative pressure in the middle ear.
Otovent® helps equalize the pressure in the middle ear by inflating a balloon over the nose using the autoinflation technique. Autoinflation with a nasal balloon increases nasal pressure and thus allows the Eustachian tube to open.
Negative pressure in the middle ear can manifest itself through symptoms such as a blocked ear, impaired hearing, pain/discomfort, heaviness or dizziness.
When the Eustachian tube is opened with Otovent® treatment, the middle ear is ventilated, fluid can be drained and symptoms are relieved.
If negative pressure in the middle ear is not treated, it can lead to tympanic effusion, also known as secretory otitis or “glued ear,” with a buildup of fluid in the middle ear.
Problems with equalization of negative pressure can arise due to malfunction of the Eustachian tube and can be the result of upper respiratory tract inflammation or acute otitis media, or can occur in connection with flying, diving or hyperbaric chamber treatment.
- Effectiveness scientifically proven
- Clinically tested
- For adults and children from 3 years of age
Application:
For tympanic effusion (stuck ear) During the first week of treatment, Otovent® should be used at least three times a day (morning, lunch, evening) with one blow into each nostril
. After a week, Otovent® should be used at least twice a day (morning and evening). Treatment may last longer than a month and several months of treatment may be required for maximum clinical effect.
After 2-3 weeks, contact your doctor to decide whether treatment should be continued.
To relieve symptoms after flying, diving or hyperbaric treatment.
When used in conjunction with flying, Otovent® should be applied 3-4 times as soon as the descent begins. If symptoms persist, treatment can be continued after landing. Otovent® can be used before/after diving and during/after hyperbaric chamber treatment to relieve symptoms.
Step-by-step instructions:
The nose piece must be clean.
1. Connect the nose balloon over the flat end of the nose piece.
2. Hold the spherical part of the nose piece firmly against the left nostril with your left hand. Pinch your right nostril with your right index finger.
3. Take a deep breath through your mouth, then close your mouth and inflate the nasal balloon by blowing through your left nostril until the nasal balloon is the size of a grapefruit (10-12cm).
4. Swallow a few times with the inflated nose balloon still pressed firmly against your nostril.
5. Repeat the process through your right nostril.
It may take some practice to learn how to use Otovent®. Slightly stretching the nose balloon before first use can make ventilation easier.
