Resveratrol is a phytochemical, more precisely a flavonoid, which occurs naturally in grapes, raspberries, blueberries, plums, peanuts and knotweed plants. These plants use resveratrol - as part of their defense system - when they are exposed to increased stress such as strong UV radiation or ozone.

Due to these special properties, resveratrol is also becoming increasingly important in nutritional science. Because in humans, the water- and fat-soluble resveratrol has an antioxidant effect by counteracting the effects of free radicals. Free radicals (=aggressive particles that chemically change body cells) arise when the organism is exposed to stressful environmental influences, such as increased UV radiation and exhaust fumes, as well as severe physical stress.
