Why does the thyroid need selenium?
The thyroid is the most selenium-rich organ in the body and is therefore particularly sensitive to an insufficient selenium supply. Like iodine, selenium is essential for the thyroid gland. The hormones produced by the thyroid gland affect overall physical development. You control z. B. the energy and bone metabolism, the digestive function, cardiovascular functions and the mental state.
Selenium is built into so-called selenium proteins. Two of these selenium proteins are essential for the thyroid gland. On the one hand, a selenium protein is necessary to produce the active thyroid hormone (T3) from the inactive form thyroxine (T4). The formation of thyroid hormones creates hydrogen peroxide, a cell poison. If hydrogen peroxide is not broken down quickly, the thyroid tissue is damaged. Another selenium protein is responsible for the breakdown of hydrogen peroxide.

Is selenium the same as selenium?
Selenium comes in different forms that are used differently by the human body. The most common form of selenium in food is selenomethionine. In contrast, the inorganic form of selenium, sodium selenite, has advantages as a dietary supplement. Sodium selenite is absorbed by the body through passive diffusion and quickly converted into selenium proteins. The body can also excrete it easily in the urine.
The bioavailability of selenomethionine is higher than that of sodium selenite, but its utilization is much more complicated. Selenomethionine is not recognized by the body as a form of selenium, but rather confused with the amino acid methionine. This leads to selenomethionine being incorporated into sulfur-containing proteins in an unspecific and unregulated manner. On the one hand, this selenium is only partially available to selenium proteins and only indirectly. On the other hand, this can lead to an accumulation in the body.

When am I adequately supplied with selenium?
The Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM) defines all values below 80 μg / l selenium in serum or below 100 μg / l selenium in whole blood as selenium deficiency. The reference range for selenium is 80 - 120 μg / l in serum and 100 - 140 μg / l in whole blood.

How do I determine my selenium status?
The selenium status is best measured as part of a blood test by your doctor, preferably in whole blood, as this value indicates the long-term supply. The serum value only reflects the current supply of selenium. It can happen that the serum value already signals a normal selenium status, while a selenium deficiency can still be detected in whole blood.

biosyn service laboratory
The biosyn service laboratory offers a determination of selenium in whole blood using modern methods such as atomic absorption spectroscopy or photometry. The correctness of the results is guaranteed by regular participation in official proficiency tests. Together with the measured values, you will receive an assessment of the results as well as a comparison with the reference values set by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).
