Selenium is an essential trace element and is therefore one of the minerals that must be ingested daily through food in order to keep the body supplied.
Selenium was discovered in 1817 by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius, who named it Selene after the Greek goddess of the moon.
Selenium is found primarily in herring, tuna, sardines, soybeans, whole wheat bread, liver, beef, pork, cod, salmon, sole, kidney beans, and dairy products.
Despite the rich food supply, the supply of selenium is not always guaranteed.
In Germany and large parts of Europe, the selenium intake levels and the selenium status of the population are considered suboptimal. The Federal Republic of Germany is one of the countries in Central Europe with the lowest levels of selenium, where the soil is leached out and the trace element is not found in sufficient quantities in arable land. Due to this low selenium content in our soil, selenium is one of the critical nutrients even in a strictly vegetarian diet.
The thyroid is our “selenium richest” organ. High levels of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase are found in the thyroid. These antioxidant enzymes protect tissues from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. However, selenium-dependent enzymes (such as glutathione peroxidase) also protect cell components throughout the body from oxidative stress and the associated cell damage caused by free radicals.
On the one hand, a good supply of selenium supports the innate and adaptive immune system and also helps to slow down excessive immune reactions. Selenium is also involved in maintaining hair and nails.
