The benefits of micronutrients using diabetes mellitus as an example

Diet-related diseases are increasing rapidly in our society and represent a major challenge. Orthomolecular medicine recommends the targeted administration of essential micronutrients for their prevention and treatment. This treatment is not intended to replace conventional medical measures, but to complement them. Using diabetes mellitus as an example, we show how the intake of certain micronutrients can improve the metabolic imbalance and largely prevent the subsequent damage caused by diabetes.

PLANT SUBSTANCES

Curcumin

The extract from the root of the tropical turmeric plant has been used as a remedy for centuries. Curcumin can reduce long-term blood sugar levels in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. "Taking curcumin reduced long-term blood sugar levels (known as HbA1c levels) in people with prediabetes by an average of 0.9%.

Curcumin intake also had positive effects on patients with type 2 diabetes: the HbA1c value was reduced by an average of 0.5% and fasting blood sugar by 11.7 mg/dl.” (Source: Poolsup N, Suksomboon N, Kurnianta PDM, Deawjaroen K. Effects of curcumin on glycemic control and lipid profile in prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus: A systematic review and meta-analysis. Cinnamon

Studies show that taking cinnamon leads to an improvement in sugar metabolism. Therefore, cinnamon is recommended for type 2 diabetics because of its beneficial benefits. “A 4-month intake of cinnamon extract led to an improvement in glucose metabolism. There was also a trend towards improvement in other metabolic markers. This study shows the beneficial use with low risk of cinnamon as a dietary supplement for type 2 diabetics."

Siberian Ginseng

Ginseng extract from Siberian ginseng has been shown to improve fasting blood sugar levels and long-term blood sugar levels. Therefore, ginseng is recommended for type 2 diabetics. "The effects of Panax ginseng in a dosage of 100 or 200 mg per day for a period of eight weeks were investigated in 36 patients with newly diagnosed, non-insulin-dependent diabetes. The study showed an improvement in fasting blood sugar levels, .... The 200 mg dose also led to an improvement in hemoglobin A1C values."

Fenugreek

Fenugreek has been considered a useful medicinal plant since ancient times. Important for diabetics is the positive effect of fenugreek on insulin-producing beta cells, which lowers blood sugar levels. "Based on the available literature, this chapter proposes that fenugreek has demonstrable antidiabetic effects, such as stimulating and/or regenerating effects on β-cells as well as extrapancreatic effects that can lower blood sugar levels in diabetics."
