What actually happens during digestion?
The food essentially consists of proteins, fats and carbohydrates. The body can only use them if they are digested, i.e. brought into a form in which they can enter the bloodstream.
To do this, the food components in the stomach and intestines must be broken down into their building blocks by certain endogenous active substances.
These digestive enzymes are constantly produced by the stomach, the pancreas and the intestinal mucosa and mixed with the digestive juices into the food pulp. The secretion of the pancreas is of particular importance here, because it contains all the enzymes required to break down the food.
The various organs involved in digestion are functionally closely related. If the supply of the enzymes is reduced, it can lead to digestive disorders.
