St. John's Wort Herbal Elixir benefits:

In the UK, St John's wort is licensed as a traditional herbal medicine to relieve the symptoms of low mood and anxiety. It has also been used to support withdrawal in smoking cessation, alcohol and drug addiction and compulsive behaviour.

John's wort apparently refers to John the Baptist, as the plant blooms around the time of the feast of St. John the Baptist in late June. Historically, St. John's wort has been used for a variety of conditions, including depression, stomach ulcers, and colds, and to aid wound healing.

In clinical trials, a standardised extract of 0.3% Hypericum is generally used. St John's wort is possibly effective for menopausal symptoms, plaque psoriasis, wound healing and somatisation disorder.

John's Wort acts as a reuptake inhibitor of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine. This works to reduce the uptake of serotonin at neuronal synapses, as well as dopamine and norepinephrine. Elevated levels of neurotransmitters are believed to be helpful when treating depression.

John's wort may be used for nerve pain (neuralgia), anxiety, and tension. It may also aid in weakness, stress, irritability, and sleeping issues (insomnia). It's also claimed to ease the pain due to some conditions. These include sciatica, rheumatoid arthritis, and menstruation.

As with other antidepressant medication, the herbal remedy may take up to four weeks to exert an effect. St John's wort should not be taken in combination with other prescription drugs, including antidepressants. If you are taking other medication, check with your GP first.
