Fruit flies (also called vinegar flies) are about 3 mm large, yellow-brown insects that are primarily attracted to fermenting substances, such as fruit, fruit juices, beer, wine or milk. They contaminate this food and often lay their eggs on it, with the maggots feeding on the fruit unnoticed. At the same time, they transmit microorganisms that decompose the food. This makes them serious pests in private households, in food processing plants and in the catering trade. With the appropriate nutrients, fruit flies multiply rapidly, which leads to a significant nuisance. They also get into the faeces and thus pose a hygiene hazard.
