All parts of the plant contain essential oil. In roots, leaves and unripe fruits, 80% of this consists of the aliphatic aldehydes decanal and tridecen-(2)-al. The main component of the essential oil of the ripe fruit, on the other hand, is the monoterpene alcohol linalool. Other ingredients are flavonoids, furoisocoumarins and small amounts of alkyl phthalides.
