Methionine is an essential (indispensable) sulfur-containing amino acid. The important intermediate product S-adenosylmethionine (SAM) is produced via the methionine metabolism. In the body, SAM serves as the starting substance for the development of polyamines, adrenaline, acetylcholine and choline synthesis. SAM is an important donor of methyl groups in the metabolism.
