Vitamin C from the acerola cherry
The acerola cherry is known as one of the fruits in the world richest in vitamin C. It comes from Central America and Brazil. The natural vitamin C content is even higher than that of citrus fruits. 100g of oranges contain around 50 mg of vitamin C. The fruit powder from the acerola fruit, on the other hand, contains 17 g per 100g of fruit powder.
The acerola fruit is also known for being the most manipulated product. Since the natural vitamin C content drops immediately after harvest, some manufacturers try to make up for the loss by producing synthetic vitamin C. An indication of synthetic vitamin C can be either an industrially processed acerola powder, or an organic product that is offered at an unusually low price, in contrast to other organic products. Organic certification only serves as a quality criterion and does not guarantee that no synthetic vitamin C has been added.
The acerola powder is supplied by a small farmer in Brazil. He grows the fruit without the use of pesticides, genetic engineering or radiation. The harvest takes place in complete harmony with nature. The aim is to process the raw material as gently as possible, as this plays a major role in the quality of the products and contributes to the preservation of the rainforest. The gentle and manual processing ensures that the fruit is not damaged during harvesting and that the natural vitamin C content is retained for as long as possible. In contrast to industrial production, this processing method is significantly more expensive, but guarantees an acerola product with 100% natural vitamin C content. In order not only to monitor compliance with quality standards, but also to maintain personal contact with the acerola producers, regular visits to the production facility are guaranteed.
After the harvest, the product is examined in the laboratory. After passing the inspection, a gentle spraying process takes place, using organic maltodextrin as a carrier. Since the acerola powder is extremely sensitive to oxygen and would spoil quickly, the use of maltodextrin is necessary. BioProphyl's maltodextrin is obtained from cassava. The producer only uses the amount of maltodextrin that is absolutely necessary. In contrast to lower quality products (up to 70% maltodextrin), the BioProphyl product contains less than 30%.
