Urinary stone diseases
Up to 5 percent of the population in the Federal Republic are affected by urinary stones. The causes vary depending on the type of stone. Metabolic disorders can lead to high concentrations of poorly soluble salts in the urine and thus to crystallization. The urine pH also plays a role. A urinary stone can be as small as a grain of cereal, but it can also be the size of a hen's egg and larger.
How do I know if I have urinary stones?
Urinary stones can cause symptoms that range from mild, barely noticeable to very severe pain (colic). Not every urinary stone triggers colic. Smaller deposits are initially not noticed. Although most stones are not very large, their sharp-edged crystal structure causes considerable pain. If a stone from the kidney gets into the ureter, sudden and repetitive cramps (colic) can occur. Depending on where the stone is located, the pain radiates into the back, groin, thighs, and into the genitals. Nausea and vomiting during colic can be tormenting companions. In any case, clarification by a doctor is required.
Urinary stone is not urinary stone
Urinary stones often pass spontaneously when urinating. To determine the causes of stone formation, knowledge of the composition of the urinary stones is of great importance. Every urinary stone should be carefully analyzed. The urine can be filtered to find lost stones. Have the collected urinary stones analyzed and follow the therapy recommendations of your urologist!
How can you prevent urinary stones?
Urinary stone disease is a chronic disease of the entire organism. Depending on the stone composition, patients often develop urinary stones again without precautionary measures (high recurrence rates of 30-70%).
General measures to prevent stone formation again
• through adequate fluid intake (2.5 to 3 l per day)
• through a healthy, varied diet with reduced amounts of animal protein (stone-specific nutritional recommendations can be requested from Blemaren Service Aristo Pharma)
• regular sporting activities such as cycling, gardening, also climbing stairs and walking
• weight
normalization of uric acid stones (frequency approx. 10-15% )
Only uric acid stones can be dissolved and the formation of new ones prevented by alkalizing the urine with medication (eg with Blemaren N).
Test your urine pH with Blemastrip! A constant low urine pH of less than 5.8 is a typical characteristic of uric acid stone patients. The test with Blemastrip is very simple and enables the urinary pH value to be determined immediately. Blemastrip is available in any pharmacy.
Calcium
stones (frequency approx. 70-80%) Calcium stones cannot be dissolved with medication.
Alkali citrates (e.g. Blemaren N) can prevent the formation of new calcium stones and / or the increase in size of remaining fragments.
